Counseling & Play Therapy for Children

Is your child struggling to express himself or herself appropriately?  Does he or she have feelings or behaviors they find difficult to manage? Are you struggling with your own feelings and are wondering what to do next?

Child counselors and play therapists utilize play therapy to help children express what is troubling them when they do not have the verbal language to express their thoughts and feelings. In play therapy, toys are like the child's words and play is the child's language. Children do not communicate or process feelings the way that adults do, therefore, a play therapist enters a child's world and communicates with them and supports them (via play) in their own language. It is my experience that children do best when therapists can join them where they are.

Specific toys are introduced in the playroom, including toys that are considered nurturing, aggressive, real life or creative. When a child chooses a certain toy from a certain category, the play therapist gains knowledge about what issues a child may be struggling with, and by utilizing these toys therapeutically, a child begins to process these issues through their play. Please feel free to watch the short video to learn more about it.

Play therapy can be used to address issues of anxiety, depression, anger, grief and loss, divorce and separation, crisis or trauma, physical and sexual buse, domestic violence, autism and behavioral issues.

If your child needs counseling, please contact me.  I am a Registered Play Therapist, also trained in Child Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT), and am ready to help. Please click
